We live in Vacationland, so why not make your next vacation a staycation? People flock from all over the country, and beyond, to enjoy the wonders of our state, year ‘round. Tourists flock here in the Winter, for snowmobiling, skiing, snowboarding, ice-climbing, ice fishing and even winter camping*. How lucky are we, to already live in a great winter recreation destination?

Maine also boasts a beautiful coastline; hiking for every level, from walking & biking trails to mountains begging to be climbed; great fishing; fun-filled festivals and fairs; live music at both indoor and outdoor venues, including big names and local artists; everything from live theater to drive in theaters; camping, glamping and more.

As many of us are currently longing for warmer weather, let’s talk about what we can look forward to this Spring & Summer. Even with a limited budget, there is plenty to see, do, experience and enjoy in our own great state! Let’s start locally, with free outdoor music, along the scenic Kennebec River. Mid-June through August, you can catch live family-friendly evening concerts, outdoor Tuesdays in Hallowell, Wednesdays in Augusta and Fridays in Gardiner. Pack a picnic or grab something in one of many downtown eateries and head riverside to enjoy the music and the views.

Do you have a thing for Cruise-Ins* or Drive-Ins? Maine still has plenty of both. Classic planes, trains and automobiles (and more) can always be seen at Owls Head Transportation Museum. If you prefer the atmosphere of cruise-in events, there are literally dozens to choose from each week, throughout the summer. There is generally no charge, many cars & car enthusiasts, food for sale and even music. If you crave the old-style movie experience of the drive-in theater, you can find them in Bridgeton, Hermon, Madawaska, Saco, Skowhegan & Westbrook.

Fun can be had right here in Maine, on a budget and sometimes even for free. You just have to look for posts about fun events in your community and be willing to try new things. If you need help funding your staycation, wish to set up a club to set aside funds, or would like a pre-paid Visa to keep your fun on budget, see us at GFCU.  Enjoy your Staycation!
